Carpet and  Upholstery Stains Explained

 
The Meaning
In short, a Carpet or upholstery Stain is a stain! It is a permanent discoloration that can be clearly distinguished from the surface of the material, or the medium it is found upon.

The key words here are ‘permanent discoloration’. Which is why stain removal services in regards to carpet and upholstery cleaning are not apart of the basic service.
 
The Truth
The main reason why carpets and upholstery gets cleaned is because dirt and microscopic dust particles which build up and up till they discolor the visual surface, but that’s not considered permanent, and therefore not a stain
 
Often claims are made by product and person to remove stains, let ‘Dirt Cheap’ be the one to tell you that if it is a ‘Permanent Stain’ it isn’t possible to make it totally disappear, but through some extra chemical work it is possible to diminish the stain, leaving a less noticeable mark. so the claim stands true that they have removed the stain, but not completely.
 
General hot water and high pressure steam cleaning removes most discolorations. Bellow is a list of common stains that will effectively leave a mark on carpet & materials. To be perfectly honest efforts to make some of these stains diminish may or may not be worth while paying the extra cost to treat.

ACID STAIN. Generally its a burning of the fibers that cause discolouration. The section of carpet MAY need to be removed  and replaced by a carpet layer

BLEACH STAIN. You will need a ‘Spot dye service’

BLOOD STAIN. The stain can be chemically broken down minimising its visual appearance through extra treatment.

BURNS. You can DIY the a small burn yourself, larger burns may need carpet repair/sectional replacement by a carpet layer.

CHEWING GUM. Gums can be chemically broken down and effectively removed through extra treatment.

COFFEE STAIN. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning, further treatments are available but not always highly effective.

DYE STAIN. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning but effectively you may need a ‘spot dye service’.

INK STAIN. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning but effectively you may need a ‘spot dye service’.

CORDIAL STAIN. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning but effectively you may need a ‘spot dye service’.

MARKERS STAIN. If its small you may DIY the spot yourself if it out of control You may need a ‘Spot dye service’ or a ‘carpet layer’.

MUSTARD STAIN. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning, if not you may need a ‘Spot dye service’ or a ‘carpet layer’.

NAIL POLISH STAIN. In effect is a paint small spots may be DIY but effectively a ‘Spot dye service’ or a ‘carpet layer’.

RED STAINS. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning but effectively you may need a ‘spot dye service’.

RED WINE STAINS. Can be lightened through basic steam cleaning but effectively you may need a ‘spot dye service’.

RUST STAIN. This Is the most expensive stain Dirt Cheap chemically removes. results can be almost non existent through extra treatment.

URINE STAIN. The stain can be chemically broken down minimising its visual appearance through extra treatment.

WAX STAIN. You can DIY most of the stain out yourself prior to our arrival.

 
 
Spot Dye Services
Carpet Cleaners who claim that they can remove stains completely do exist! this method is not really a removal it more of a Houdini hide the stain technique, but effectively giving you the results you want. they perform a process called ‘spot dyeing’ this is a method where they reintroduce colour dyes into the carpet, effectively trying to match your existing carpet. This method is by no means cheap. Dirt Cheap does not offer this method as apart of our service but we do recommend that you find out how long the technician has been Spot dyeing for, as the skills for colour matching generally only get perfected over time. Just because Dirt cheap doesn’t offer a spot dyeing service, doesn’t mean we don’t want to clean your carpets before hand. if you want to save some money book us in prior to the ‘Spot dye service’

 

Cheap Replacement Alternative

Another alternative is to call in a carpet layer and ask if the can remove and replace section of damaged carpet from your floor, if the stain is small enough most carpet layers will often use an old stored of cut you may have, or perhaps piece of carpet hidden behind a closet door.
